Balloon Live

Digital scoring for hot air balloon competitions

An Android and iOS app for competition pilots: they declare goals and drop markers on the phone, the flight is tracked and signed, and the scorers see the tracks as they are flown.

Balloon Live's flight screen on a phone during a test event: the competition's name, blurred here, the time, a warning, the position as a grid reference, altitude and speeds, and a large button to drop marker 1
  1. Event. The competition the pilot is flying in, blurred here.

  2. Time and warnings. The time, and warnings such as a device that has disconnected.

  3. Position. The balloon's position as a UTM grid reference.

  4. Flight data. Altitude, and horizontal and vertical speed.

  5. Drop a marker. One tap drops the marker. It is saved with the flight data, which is signed.

01Scenario

At hot air balloon competitions, pilots wrote their goal declarations down by hand and dropped physical markers. It took time, left room for mistakes and meant long debriefings after each flight.

02Solution

Declaring and tracking

On the phone. Pilots declare goals and drop markers in the Balloon Live app instead of on paper, and each action is recorded the moment it happens.

Tracking. The app follows the balloon with the phone's GPS or with a custom device made for ballooning competitions, which adds barometric measurements to GPS for more precise tracking.

Flight data and scoring

Signed data. All flight data, including declarations and marker drops, is saved in the IGC format and digitally signed with a security key, so it cannot be changed without that showing.

Live tracks. When the phone has a data connection during the flight, the app sends the track to the cloud as it is flown, and scorers can see it straight away.

No SD cards. The data syncs to the cloud, so nobody has to download it from SD cards as before, and debriefings are needed only for special cases.

03Outcome

Quicker scoring
Scorers see tracks during the flight and get the signed data without collecting SD cards.
Fewer disputes
Declarations and marker drops are recorded digitally as they happen, which leaves less room for mistakes in scoring.
Shorter debriefings
Debriefings are needed only for special cases, such as disputes.
